When was the last time that you’ve been to the library? Not necessarily to check out a particular book, but rather to think, brainstorm, read, write, plan, set goals, etc for your business. In case you haven’t been in a while, I highly recommend that you find your way back there because it really is a great place to get away, and spend some quiet focused time with your thoughts and ideas. Personally going to the public library is a regular occurrence for me especially when I’m writing articles such as this. I usually stop by one of our local Speedway gas stations and pick up a 20oz house blend coffee and put some hazelnut cream in it on my way. You’d think that I would like the fancy Starbucks or Panera Bread coffee’s (because I have been know to be a little ritzy at times) but they really just don’t do it for me like a good’ol cup of “Premium Blend” from Speedway. Plus I’m in and out in about 20 seconds there, so that makes a big difference in my mind too.
In any event, back to this library talk. You know, I heard a statistic one time from one of my marketing mentors’s, Dan Kennedy, who said (and I’m not sure these statistics are exactly accurate, but close) only about 3% of the population has a library card and there are 40% or so think that Elvis is still alive. Notice I said “think” he is still alive, not “believe” he is still alive. These people don’t “believe” in an untruth, rather they simply don’t have a clue…literally. Don’t ask me how these stats are derived, but either way, if the principal of the stats in and of itself doesn’t make you scratch your head in disbelief then I don’t know what does.
I challenge you to take me up on my suggestion of spending at least 1 hour a week at the library for 1 month. It’s kind of like going to the gym, but for your mind. It’s not always easy or convenient going in the beginning, but once you get into a grove, it’s easy to become hooked!
Oh and at the very least, get a library card will ya!
