Focus On Progress, Not Perfection

Focus On Progress, Not Perfection
Do you know what the snail said when sitting on top of the turtle? When sitting on top of the turtle the snail said… WEeeeee!

My minister, Jim Bird, told this during one of his sermons and I just loved it because the point was driven home to me perfectly with the mental image of a snail riding a turtle shouting in excitement.

The point is simply this: Focus on Progress, not Perfection. You don’t have to be the fastest, the smartest, the strongest, the wisest, the most perfect at what you do. Rather you need to be someone who is constantly progressing in everything that you do.

Yes, very often it will feel like two steps forward and one step back, but that’s ok as long as you are progressing. Here are some other words that progression is equivalent to: Movement, Growth, Development, Improvement.

The moment you think perfection exists, or is attainable, is the moment you are about to take a nose-dive into very shallow water. Oh, and don’t do that by the way because it hurts. I did it when I was about 7 years old and I still remember it. Luckily I didn’t dive straight down. I was stupid and thought I could dive into a pool at enough of an angle that I wouldn’t hit the bottom. I WAS WRONG, and it hurt.

So, the next time you think that things just aren’t going your way or that this business doesn’t work, I want you to think of the snail on the turtle and say, “WEeeee!” Because it is all about Progress, Not Perfection!
