Little Hinges Swing Big Doors

The first time I heard one of my mentors (yes I still have mentors, and I pay them a lot of money to help me grow everyday as an entrepreneur) tell me that “Little Hinges Swing Big Doors” I was taken back by the simplicity, power and truth of this statement.  Let me give you an example of a little hinge that swings a big door. 

Little Hinge Example:

I was having one of my regular 1-on-1 phone calls with a Mastermind student this past month and we were discussing a real estate investment deal that she was trying to resell for a pretty good profit ($20k+).  We were going through all the ways to get her property sold as quickly as possible and the one method that I was most adamant about was putting an ugly cheap handwritten sign in the yard that read, “Home For Sale Must Go ASAP, 555-1234.”  Little did she know that this cheap, ugly, little sign was going to be the hinge that swung open the big door for her $20k payday.        

 Here are some other Little Hinge examples that swing big doors.  The list is endless and can vary from all over the spectrum. 

  • Ask your seller or buyer to write you a testimonial letter
  • Make a follow up call to a seller about their house
  • Ask someone for a referral
  • Send flowers, or a card and say thank you to your title company just because.
  • Put out an ugly handwritten sign
  • Request a new BPO (Broker Price Opinion) from a short sale lender on a property.
  • Have a brief weekly meeting with your team about the week ahead. 
  • Find an apprentice to help you with your business.
  • Read a self-help book that interests you.
  • Turn off the news and put down the newspaper for a week and give your mind a break from the negative pollution.
  • Don’t make promises you can’t keep.
  • Do business with integrity.
  • Have and follow a system for generating new leads consistently.

 The key is to recognize that little hinges DO swing big doors and if I were you I would take an hour and make a list of your own to recognize the little hinges that are helping to swing your big doors in your life and business.  You’ll be surprised the list you come up with.  You’ll also be surprised the other little hinges you should be doing to continue to make your big doors swing to making real money in this business.
